Lake Erie Walleye Fishing Outlook for 2026

Welcome to Lake Erie — widely recognized as the Walleye Capital of the World. The 2026 season is shaping up to be one of the strongest in modern history, supported by exceptional hatches, a booming population, and consistent year‑class strength across the Western and Central Basins.

Record Walleye Population

As of 2026, Lake Erie’s walleye population is estimated at 180 million fish, the highest level recorded in decades. This surge is the result of nearly ten years of strong reproduction, with seven of the last ten hatches ranking above average.

Population Highlights

  • Total Population: 180 million fish in 2025 — up from 89 million adult fish in 2023.
  • 2025 Western Basin Hatch: 128 fish per hectare — the sixth‑largest in 38 years and more than double the long‑term average of 57.
  • Central Basin Production: 26 young‑of‑year per hectare — the fourth‑best index ever recorded.
  • 2024 Hatch: Below average at 19 fish per hectare, but offset by the exceptional 2025 hatch.

The 2025 hatch will reach legal harvest size (15 inches) by spring 2027, ensuring continued world‑class fishing for years to come.

Size & Age Structure for 2026

The 2026 season will feature a healthy mix of age classes, with strong numbers of 2‑, 3‑, 4‑, 5‑, and 8‑year‑old walleye. Anglers can expect:

  • 20–26 inch fish dominating the catch
  • 2–7 pound average weights
  • Consistent action across reefs, open water, and migration routes
  • Excellent trophy potential thanks to multiple strong year classes

With both average and above‑average hatches layered between exceptional ones, Lake Erie’s walleye fishery remains one of the most stable and productive in the world.

Yellow Perch Outlook

Perch fishing in the Western Basin was strong in 2025, and with another average hatch entering the system, the 2026 perch season is expected to be productive as well. Anglers should see good numbers of keeper‑size perch throughout the late summer and fall.

2026 Fishing Season Expectations

Coe Vanna Charters begins fishing right after ice‑out in April and continues through October. Early spring jig fishing often produces fast limits, and drift casting remains a favorite method throughout the season. Trolling is available upon request.

With the current population strength, anglers can expect daily limits to be common throughout the entire season.
